LaPorte is a city in LaPorte County in the northwest of the state of Indiana . It is the administrative seat of the county administration ( County Seat ) of the county of the same name.

LaPorte is located approximately 50 miles ( 81 km ) southeast of Chicago as the crow flies . The road distance is 109 km (68 miles). With Michigan City located 21 km (11 miles) northeast, LaPorte forms the Michigan City-La Porte Metro Area .

According to estimates, LaPorte had 21,610 inhabitants in 2017. About 88% were white.
history
LaPorte was originally the area of the Pottawatomie Indians. In the 17th century, French fur traders came from the direction of nearby Lake Michigan . As the woodland opened onto the prairie at the site of the present-day town , the French named the site after the French word for door or entrance ( porte ).
The LaPorte settlement began building a sawmill in the summer of 1832 . In 1835 LaPorte was raised to an independent village (incorporated). In 1852 the place had 5000 inhabitants and was elevated to the status of a city.
At this point, LaPorte already had the first medical training facility in the Midwest . From the LaPorte Medical School graduate, among others, William James Mayo of the founder Mayo Clinic .
LaPorta hit the news in 1908 when it became known as the crime scene of serial killer Belle Gunness .
At the beginning of the 20th century, industry began to settle here, including the manufacturer of agricultural machines Advance-Rumely . Advance-Rumely produced in the city until 1980 and was the largest local employer.
