William James Mayo

William James Mayo (born June 29, 1861 in Le Sueur , Minnesota , † July 28, 1939 in Rochester , Minnesota), called Will Mayo, was an American surgeon and co-founder of the Mayo Clinic .

Career

Mayo graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in medicine in 1883 and received his doctorate there that same year. After a tornado struck Rochester in August 1883, he helped his father, William Worrall Mayo, run a makeshift clinic. Together with him and his brother Charles Horace , he founded the Saint Marys Hospital in 1889 . In the following years it became a modern clinic, which enjoys a worldwide reputation as the Mayo Clinic .

Will Mayo himself became one of the most sought-after surgeons in the USA, setting standards primarily through his interdisciplinary treatment. In 1921 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
