biography

After Mayo had successfully completed his medical studies at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago in 1888 , he began to work in the practice of his father William Worrall Mayo and brother William James Mayo . Through teaching stays in the USA and Europe and working with his father, Mayo acquired current treatment methods that were very progressive for the time being. The practice expanded the Mayos and opened in October 1889 " St. Mary's Hospital ", the first hospital in southern Minnesota. Thanks to the new treatment methods, the Mayo Clinic , as it is later called, continued to grow until the turn of the century and is still considered one of the most important clinics in the world. Charles Horace Mayo subsequently specialized in thyroid and eye diseases as well as diseases of the nervous system. Four years after his father's death in 1915, Charles Horace and his brother founded the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research .

In 1928 Mayo retired, leaving his son Charles William Mayo to continue working at the Mayo Clinic . By the time he died, the clinic had treated over a million patients.

Mayo and his wife Edith Maria Graham had nine children.
