Saint Marys Hospital (Rochester)
The Saint Marys Hospital is the largest hospital in Rochester , Minnesota . It opened in 1889 and is part of the renowned Mayo Clinic .
history
founding
After a tornado strength F5 were Rochester, in which 37 people killed, Mother Alfred Moes decided by the Franciscan Order of Saint Francis to build a new hospital. This was to be done in collaboration with William Worrall Mayo . The British medic had come to Rochester during the American Civil War in the 1860s and worked there as mayor and doctor in a practice he ran with his sons William James and Charles Horace .
In 1887, Mother Alfred bought a piece of land west of the city on which the hospital was built for $ 2,200.
The newly built Saint Marys Hospital opened on September 30, 1889 with a capacity of 27 beds. Under the leadership of their father, who is now 70 years old, “Will” and “Charlie” gained work experience as treating doctors, while the Saint Francis sisters were responsible for the care and care of the patients. Until 1905 both were the only ones who performed operations at the "Mayo Clinic". Thanks to new treatment methods and its organizational structure (which ensured thorough examinations and diagnostic measures before starting therapy), the clinic quickly gained fame and treated a large number of patients. In 1901 Henry Stanley Plummer came to Saint Marys Hospital as a doctor. The existing premises quickly became too small and required an expansion of the “Mayo Clinic”.
With the establishment of the Mayo Properties Association (today: Mayo Foundation ) in 1919, the Saint Marys Hospital became part of the non-profit organization.
Expansion and development
In addition to Saint Marys Hospital, the Mayo Clinic organization has several hospitals, research and teaching facilities nationwide. The hospital itself was enlarged several times in the 20th century with additions and new buildings and consists of a total of six buildings, which were named after the sisters of the order and the Francis order itself. The Mayo Eugenio Litta Children's Hospital has also been part of the hospital complex since 1997 .
Saint Marys Hospital is ranked as part of the Mayo Clinic among the Best Hospitals in the United States. The hospital has a total of 1,157 beds. Around 26,500 operations are performed annually in 58 operating theaters.
