Canton of Klötze

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The canton Klötze (also canton Clötze , Canton Clötze , rarely also Canton Klötze or canton Ristedt ) was an administrative unit in the Kingdom of Westphalia . The canton was established in December 1807, but as early as November 1808 the Amt Klötze of the Electorate of Braunschweig-Lüneburg (or Electorate of Hanover) was spun off again and the canton dissolved again. After the annexation of the Electorate of Braunschweig-Lüneburg by the Kingdom of Westphalia in March 1810, the office of Klötze was combined with the Canton of Jübar . According to the administrative structure of the Kingdom of Westphalia, the canton of Klötze belonged to the Salzwedel district of the Elbe department . The canton's capital was Klötze ( Altmarkkreis Salzwedel , Saxony-Anhalt ), and later Ristedt (Altmarkkreis Salzwedel).

history

With the Peace of Tilsit , Prussia lost the Altmark and the Duchy of Magdeburg along with other parts of the country . On August 18, 1807, the Altmark became part of the newly created Kingdom of Westphalia. In 1807 an administrative reform was carried out in the areas of the new kingdom. Together with the Duchy of Magdeburg, the Calvörde Office of the Principality of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel and some Saxon areas, the Altmark formed the newly created Department of the Elbe, which was divided into four districts ( Magdeburg , Neuhaldensleben , Stendal and Salzwedel). After the directory of departments, districts, cantons and communes of the Kingdom in December 1807 of Salzwedel district was subdivided into 15 cantons ( cantons ), including the Canton blocks. According to the directory of the departments, districts, cantons and communes of the kingdom , the canton of Klötze had nine municipalities in 1807 (original spellings that differ from today's place names are in italics):

The choice of Klötze as the canton's capital or the incorporation of the office of Klötze was a mistake, as the office of Klötze belonged to the Electorate of Hanover, the territories of which the Kingdom of Westphalia could not dispose of at that time. According to the historical local dictionary, the office of Klötze was restored in November 1808. After the formal annexation of the Electorate of Hanover by the Kingdom of Westphalia in March 1810, the office of Klötze fell back to the Kingdom of Westphalia and was added to the Canton of Jübar .

Most of the places in the canton of Klötze belonged to the Salzwedelic district of Altmark until 1807 , and the office of Klötze (Klötze and Döllnitz) to the Electorate of Hanover. In the sixth volume (Holland and Westphalia) of the newest countries and ethnology: A geographical reading book for all statuses from 1808, the canton of Klötze is referred to as canton Ristedt (vormahls Clötze) . This canton Ristedt had seven municipalities. Ristedt, which had 136 inhabitants (!), Is given as the canton's capital. After this plant, the canton of Ristedt (formerly Clötze) had 1,640 inhabitants.

After the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig in October 1813, the Kingdom of Westphalia dissolved. From 1813 to 1816 the office of Klötze was re-established. In an exchange of territory between the kingdoms of Hanover and Prussia, the office of Klötze came to Prussia on January 1, 1816. In the Prussian administrative reform of 1816, Gardelegen became the seat of the newly created Gardelegen district . Klötze, Lockstedt b. Klötze and Brüchau came to the district of Gardelegen, Bandau, Hohenhenningen, Immekath Jeeben, Ristedt and Tangeln to the district of Salzwedel .
