history

In the Peace of Tilsit , Prussia lost the Altmark along with other areas . With the decree of August 18, 1807, the Altmark became part of the newly created Kingdom of Westphalia. In 1807 an administrative reform was carried out in the previously Prussian Altmark. The Altmark, together with other formerly Prussian parts of the country, formed the newly created department of the Elbe, which was divided into four districts ( Magdeburg , Neuhaldensleben, Stendal and Salzwedel). After the directory of departments, districts, cantons and communes of the Kingdom in December 1807 of Salzwedel district was divided into 15 cantons ( cantons ), including the city of Canton Gardelegen and the Canton of Gardelegen. The following belonged to the city canton of Gardelegen (different original spellings of the place names in italics):

The towns of the city canton of Gardelegen belonged to the Salzwedelschen Kreis of Altmark until 1807 . In 1808 the city canton of Gardelegen had 6,273 inhabitants. In 1810 Mr. Grube was a canton master, the canton still had 5606 inhabitants. On September 1, 1810, the Salzwedel district (in the Elbe department) was dissolved. A new district of Salzwedel in the department of the Lower Elbe was formed from eight cantons (or nine) . The city canton of Gardelegen was assigned to the Neuhaldensleben district in the Elbe department. In 1811 it had 5974 inhabitants.

With the collapse of the Kingdom of Westphalia after the Battle of Leipzig in October 1813, the previous Prussian administrative structure was restored. Gardelegen became the seat of the newly created Gardelegen district in the administrative reform of 1816/17 .
