The Stadtkanton Salzwedel (also just Kanton Salzwedel , or Canton Salzwedel , Stadt-Kanton Salzwedel, or canton Salzwedel, ville ) was an administrative unit in the Kingdom of Westphalia . It existed from 1807 to the dissolution of the kingdom in 1813 and, according to the administrative structure of 1807, initially belonged to the Salzwedel district of the Elbe department . The canton capital (chef lieu) was Salzwedel ( Altmarkkreis Salzwedel ) in Saxony-Anhalt.

history

With the Peace of Tilsit , Prussia had to cede other parts of the country as well as the Altmark , which became part of the newly created Kingdom of Westphalia on August 18, 1807. In 1807 administrative reform was initiated in the areas of the new kingdom. The Altmark, together with other previously Prussian areas ( Duchy of Magdeburg ) and smaller Saxon parts of the country, formed the newly created department of the Elbe, which was divided into four districts ( Magdeburg , Neuhaldensleben , Stendal and Salzwedel). After the directory of departments, districts, cantons and communes of the Kingdom in the first volume of the Bulletin des lois du Royaume de Westphalie of 24 December 1807 divided the Salzwedel district in 15 cantons (cantons) , including the (urban) Canton Salzwedel (here Canton Salzwedel ). The following belonged to the canton of Salzwedel (different original spellings of the place names in italics):

The communities belonged to the Markbrandenburg Salzwedelische Kreis der Altmark until 1807 . Many of the villages belonged to the Dambeck School Authority, but other communities belonging to the Dambeck School Authority were assigned to other cantons. In 1808 the city canton of Salzwedel had 7,427 inhabitants.

With the annexation of the Electorate of Braunschweig-Lüneburg in 1810, the three new departments, Northern Department , Department of Nieder-Elbe and Department of Aller were founded on September 1st, 1810 . The Salzwedel district (in the Elbe department) was practically dissolved. A new district of Salzwedel in the department of the Nieder-Elbe was formed from eight cantons, including the city and rural canton of Salzwedel. In the north, the cantons of Bretsch and Pollitz were given to the district of Stendal. In the south, the cantons of Mieste , Gardelegen (city), Gardelegen (country) and Zichtau came to the Neuhaldensleben district. In return, the district received the cantons of Quickborn , Gartow , Lüchow and Wustrow in the north and the canton of Wittingen in the west .

On March 5, 1811, the Nieder-Elbe department was dissolved, and the Salzwedel district was transferred back to the Elbe department.

In 1811 Mr. Gerlach was a cantonal maire. Mr. Gödicke and Mr. Scheer were assigned to him as adjuncts . The city canton of Salzwedel had 7,634 inhabitants.

Johann Georg Heinrich Hassel gives in his work Statistical Repertory on the Kingdom of Westphalia the area of the canton with 2.5 square miles , the population with 7,974 inhabitants. The population corresponds to the information in the Royal Westphalian Court and State Calendar for the year 1812 . The adjuncts of the Kantonmaire Gerlach are referred to here as Gölicke and Stampehl.

With the collapse of the Kingdom of Westphalia after the Battle of Leipzig in October 1813, the previous Prussian administrative structure was restored and the cantons dissolved again. In 1816 there was a major district reform in which the old Markbrandenburg districts z. T. newly cut, z. Some of them were also dissolved and new circles were created. The municipalities of the canton of Salzwedel-Stadt now came to the newly cut Salzwedel district .
