The canton Zichtau (also Canton Zichtau ) was an administrative unit in the Kingdom of Westphalia . It existed from 1807 to the dissolution of the kingdom in 1813 and, according to the administrative structure of 1807, initially belonged to the Salzwedel district of the Elbe department , and from September 1, 1810 to the Neuhaldensleben district of the Elbe department.

history

With the Peace of Tilsit , Prussia lost the Altmark - along with other areas - to the newly created Kingdom of Westphalia by decree of August 18, 1807. An administrative reform was carried out in the Altmark by December 1807. The Altmark, together with other formerly Prussian parts of the country (parts of the Duchy of Magdeburg ), formed the newly created department of the Elbe, which was divided into four districts ( Magdeburg , Neuhaldensleben, Stendal and Salzwedel). After the directory of departments, districts, cantons and communes of the Kingdom in December 1807 of Salzwedel district was divided into 15 cantons ( cantons ), including the Canton Zichtau. The following belonged to the canton of Zichtau (different original spellings of the place names in italics):

The places of the canton Zichtau belonged to the Salzwedelschen Kreis of the Altmark until 1807 . In 1808 the canton of Zichtau had 1,830 inhabitants. With Decree No. 69 of November 18, 1808, the canton of Zichtau received the places Neuendorf with Brüchau and Siedentramm from the canton of Klötze .

In 1810 the canton had 2098 (?) Inhabitants. A Mr. von Voss was a canton mayor who also administered the canton of Kalbe in the Salzwedel district. On September 1, 1810, the Salzwedel district (in the Elbe department) was dissolved. A new district of Salzwedel in the department of the Lower Elbe was formed from eight cantons (or nine) . The canton of Zichtau was assigned to the Neuhaldensleben district in the Elbe department. In 1811 it had 2546 inhabitants.

The Kingdom of Westphalia disintegrated in October 1813 after the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig , and the previous Prussian administrative structure was restored in the Altmark. Zichtau came to the newly created district of Gardelegen in the administrative reform of 1816/17 .
