from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Department of the Elbe (1808). The Salzwedel district is the western district.

The district of Salzwedel was an administrative unit in the department of the Elbe in the Kingdom of Westphalia . It was formed by the Royal Decree of December 24, 1807 and existed in this area until July 1810. In July 1810 it was dissolved and a new district Salzwedel was founded in the department of the Nieder-Elbe with a slightly different area. The Nieder-Elbe department was dissolved again at the beginning of March 1811 and the (new) Salzwedel district was assigned to the Elbe department. With the end of the Kingdom of Westphalia at the end of 1813, its administrative structure also dissolved and the previous administrative structures were restored.

history

With the Peace of Tilsit the Kingdom of Prussia a . a. cede the Duchy of Magdeburg and the Altmark to the Kingdom of Westphalia. The Elbe department with its four districts Magdeburg , Neuhaldensleben , Salzwedel and Stendal was formed from the Altmark and the Duchy of Magdeburg as well as the County of Barby and the Amt of Gommern , which had been ceded by the Kingdom of Saxony Areas that previously belonged to the Salzwedelische Kreis , Tangermündeschen Kreis , the Arendseeische Kreis and Seehausenschen Kreis of the Mark Brandenburg . The Salzwedel district in the department of the Elbe was in 15 cantons ( Cantons ) divided (in the order as in the Bulletin , population figures for the work of the Kingdom of Westphalia ):

  • Canton of Mieste with seven municipalities (2,046 inhabitants)
  • Canton of Gardelegen with seven municipalities (6,273 inhabitants)
  • Land canton of Gardelegen with ten municipalities (2,225 inhabitants)
  • Canton Zichtau with eight municipalities (1,830 inhabitants)
  • Canton Brome ( Canton Brohme , also Canton Nettgau) This was a mistake at that time, because Brome belonged to the Electorate of Hanover (only on September 1, 1810 was Brome attached to the Kingdom of Westphalia and incorporated into the Salzwedel district) with seven municipalities (1,376 inhabitants )
  • Canton Klötze ( Canton Clötze , also Canton Ristedt) The assignment of Klötze to the district of Salzwedel was an error at this time. The office of Klötze continued to belong to the Electorate of Hanover (it was not until September 1, 1810 that the office of Klötze was attached to the Kingdom of Westphalia and incorporated into the Salzwedel district) with nine municipalities (1,640 inhabitants)
  • Canton of Kalbe ( Canton of Calbe ) with ten municipalities (3,435 inhabitants)
  • Canton Groß Apenburg (also Canton Großapenburg) with ten municipalities (2,606 inhabitants)
  • Canton Beetzendorf ( Canton Betzendorf ) with eleven municipalities (3,205 inhabitants)
  • Canton of Diesdorf with 14 municipalities (3,712 inhabitants)
  • Canton of Salzwedel with eight municipalities (7,427 inhabitants)
  • Land canton of Salzwedel with six municipalities (2,236 inhabitants)
  • Canton Arendsee with 15 municipalities (4,856 inhabitants)
  • Canton Bretsch ( Canton Bretsche ) with nine municipalities (2,645 inhabitants)
  • Canton Pollitz with nine municipalities (3,167 inhabitants)

According to the bulletin , the Salzwedel district had 50,566 inhabitants. In the work The Kingdom of Westphalia , on the other hand, the population is given as 48,679 inhabitants. The area of the Salzwedel district was 43.04 square miles. The seat of the sub-prefect, the civil court, the district council and the gendarmerie brigade was in Salzwedel.

In 1810 - with administrative effect from September 1, 1810 - the areas of the Electorate of Hanover were annexed to the Kingdom of Westphalia, and from these areas and some areas that already belonged to the Kingdom of Westphalia, three new departments, the Northern Department (only a little later into the Department the Elbe and Weser estuaries renamed), the department of the Nieder-Elbe and the department of the Aller were formed.

At the same time, the Salzwedel district in the Elbe department was dissolved, as the text of the law says. In the north, the cantons of Bretsche and Pollitz were connected to the Stendal district. In the south, the four cantons of Mieste , Gardelegen (city) , Gardelegen (country) and Zichtau were incorporated into the Neuhaldensleben district.

On September 1, 1810, however, a new district of Salzwedel was founded in the department of the Nieder-Elbe , which also contained eight cantons of the dissolved district of Salzwedels of the department of the Elbe. In the west he received five newly formed cantons from areas of the annexed Electorate of Hanover. In March 1811 the department of the Nieder-Elbe was dissolved, the (new) district of Salzwedel was transferred to the department of the Elbe in the above area.
