The canton Arendsee (also Canton Arendsee ) was an administrative unit in the Kingdom of Westphalia . It existed from 1807 until the kingdom was dissolved in 1813, and according to the administrative structure it belonged to the Salzwedel district of the Elbe department .

history

With the creation of the Kingdom of Westphalia by decree of August 18, 1807, an administrative reform was carried out in the previously Prussian Altmark in 1807. The Altmark, along with other formerly Prussian parts of the country, came for the most part to the newly created department of the Elbe, which was divided into four districts (Magdeburg, Neuhaldensleben, Stendal and Salzwedel). The Salzwedel district was divided into 15 cantons ( cantons ) including the Canton Arendsee. The following belonged to the canton of Arendsee:

In 1808 the canton Arendsee had 4856 inhabitants. In 1810 a Mr. Beust was a canton master, the canton still had 4643 inhabitants. In 1810 the Salzwedel district (in the Elbe department) was dissolved. A new district of Salzwedel in the department of the Lower Elbe was formed from eight cantons (or nine) . This department did not last long and was dissolved again in March 1811. The Salzwedel district was transferred back to the Elbe department, but with a slightly different layout. In any case, the canton Arendsee remained with the Salzwedel district. In 1811 the canton had 4,527 inhabitants. The size was stated to be 3.66 square miles.

With the collapse of the Kingdom of Westphalia after the Battle of Leipzig , the previous Prussian administrative structure was restored (e.g. the Arendsee Office ).
