The canton of Kalbe (also Canton Calbe ) was an administrative unit in the Kingdom of Westphalia . It existed from 1807 to the dissolution of the kingdom in 1813 and, according to the administrative structure of 1807, initially belonged to the Salzwedel district of the Elbe department . The canton capital ( chef lieu ) was Kalbe (Milde) in the Altmark district of Salzwedel (Saxony-Anhalt). After the dissolution of this district and its re-establishment, it belonged together with the districts of Harburg and Lüneburg to the department of the Nieder-Elbe . The department of the Nieder-Elbe was dissolved again as early as 1811, the (new) district of Salzwedel and with it the canton of Kalbe in 1811 were again transferred to the department of the Elbe. After the dissolution of the Kingdom of Westphalia in October / November 1813, the previous administrative structure was restored in the course of 1814.

history

With the Peace of Tilsit , Prussia lost the Altmark - along with other areas - to the newly created Kingdom of Westphalia by decree of August 18, 1807. An administrative reform was carried out in the Altmark by December 1807. The Altmark, together with other formerly Prussian parts of the country (parts of the Duchy of Magdeburg ), formed the newly created department of the Elbe, which was divided into four districts ( Magdeburg , Neuhaldensleben, Stendal and Salzwedel). After the directory of departments, districts, cantons and communes of the Kingdom in December 1807 of Salzwedel district was divided into 15 cantons ( cantons ), including the Canton Kalbe. The following belonged to the canton of Kalbe (different original spellings of the place names in italics):

The places in the canton of Kalbe belonged to the Arendsee district of Altmark until 1807 . In 1808 the canton of Kalbe had 3,435 inhabitants. In 1810 the canton had 3,738 inhabitants. A Herr von Voss was a canton mayor. According to the court and state calendar of 1812, the canton of Kalbe had 3,940 inhabitants.

According to the work Statistical Repertory on the Kingdom of Westphalia by Johann Georg Heinrich Hassel, the canton of Wustrow had an area of 3.25 square miles in 1811 and had 3,940 inhabitants. According to Friedrich Justin Bertuch, the canton had 3,768 inhabitants in 1811.

On September 1, 1810, the Salzwedel district (in the Elbe department) was dissolved. A new Salzwedel district in the Lower Elbe department was formed from 13 cantons . In addition to the Salzwedel district, this included the Harburg and Lüneburg districts. In 1811 the department of the Nieder-Elbe was dissolved again. The Harburg and Lüneburg districts had to be ceded to the French Empire. The Salzwedel district was referred back to the Elbe department.

The Kingdom of Westphalia disintegrated in October / November 1813 after the Battle of Leipzig , and in the Altmark the previous Prussian administrative structure was restored in the course of 1814. In the district reform of 1816/17 Kalbe (Milde) came to the newly created district of Gardelegen .
