Canton of Quickborn

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Canton Quickborn (also Canton Quickborn ) was an administrative unit in the Kingdom of Westphalia . It was formed in 1810 after the incorporation of the Electorate of Braunschweig-Lüneburg into the Kingdom of Westphalia and assigned to the Salzwedel district in the Nieder-Elbe department. As early as March 1811, the Nieder-Elbe department was dissolved and most of it came to the newly created French Hanseatic departments . The Salzwedel district was (again) connected to the Elbe department . The canton capital ( chef lieu ) of the canton Quickborn was Quickborn , part of the municipality of Gusborn in the Lüchow-Dannenberg district (Lower Saxony). After the dissolution of the Kingdom of Westphalia in October / November 1813, the cantons were dissolved again and the previous administrative structure restored.

history

With a decree of August 18, 1807, Emperor Napoleon brought the Kingdom of Westphalia into being. The first and only King Hieronymus Napoleon ( Jérôme Bonaparte ), brother of Napoleon, did not receive full sovereignty over his kingdom until December 1, 1807. In 1807, in the Peace of Tilsit, Prussia had to cede, along with other parts of the country, the Altmark and the Duchy of Magdeburg , which were added to the new kingdom. The department of the Elbe was formed from these areas, as it was divided into four districts ( Magdeburg , Neuhaldensleben , Stendal and Salzwedel).

In 1810 the Kingdom of Westphalia annexed the former Electorate of Braunschweig-Lüneburg . From these areas three new departments were formed, the department of the Nieder-Elbe, the northern department (later called the department of the Elbe and Weser estuaries ) and the department of the Aller . The Salzwedel district of the Elbe department was dissolved and a new Salzwedel district was formed in the Nieder-Elbe department . In the north, the cantons of Bretsch and Pollitz were separated and connected to the Stendal district. In the south, the cantons of Mieste , Gardelegen (city) , Gardelegen (country) and Zichtau were connected to the Neuhaldensleben district. In return, the new Salzwedel district received four cantons, Quickborn, Lüchow , Gartow and Wustrow, newly formed from areas of the Electorate of Lüneburg .

The canton Quickborn was formed from parts of the offices Gümse , Dannenberg and Hitzacker , whereby in 1808 the office Günse was already combined with the office Dannenberg. According to the division territoriale relative aux trois départements formés des anciennes provinces hanovriennes ... , which was attached to the royal decree of July 15, 1810, the canton of Quickborn consisted of the following cities, villages and farms (original spelling if different from today's spelling in italics):

According to the work Statistical Repertory on the Kingdom of Westphalia by Johann Georg Heinrich Hassel, the canton of Quickborn in 1811 had an area of 3.04 square miles and had 4,483 inhabitants.

According to the Court and State Handbook of the Kingdom of Westphalia from 1811, the canton Gartow and the canton Quickborn were administered together. Mayor was Ludwig Heinrich Philipp von Ramdohr . The population of the two cantons was given as 10,574.

After the defeat in the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig in October 1813, the Kingdom of Westphalia dissolved. The area came back to the successor state of the Electorate of Braunschweig-Lüneburg, the Kingdom of Hanover. From 1814 the previous administrative structure was restored.
