The Landkanton Gardelegen (also Canton rural de Gardelegen or Land-Canton Gardelegen ) was an administrative unit in the Kingdom of Westphalia . It existed from 1807 to the dissolution of the kingdom in 1813 and, according to the administrative structure of 1807, initially belonged to the Salzwedel district of the Elbe department , and from September 1, 1810 to the Neuhaldensleben district of the Elbe department.

history

With the Peace of Tilsit , Prussia lost the Altmark along with other parts of the country . On August 18, 1807, the Altmark became part of the newly created Kingdom of Westphalia. In 1807 an administrative reform was carried out in the areas of the new kingdom. The Altmark, together with other previously Prussian parts of the country, formed the newly created department of the Elbe, which was divided into four districts ( Magdeburg , Neuhaldensleben, Stendal and Salzwedel). After the directory of departments, districts, cantons and communes of the Kingdom in December 1807 of Salzwedel district was subdivided into 15 cantons ( cantons ), including the Canton of Gardelegen and the city of Canton Gardelegen . The following belonged to the rural canton of Gardelegen (different original spellings of the place names in italics):

The places of the rural canton of Gardelegen belonged to the Salzwedelschen Kreis of Altmark until 1807 . In 1808 the rural canton of Gardelegen had 2225 inhabitants. In 1810, Mr. Köls was a canton master, the canton still had 2,139 inhabitants. On September 1, 1810, the Salzwedel district (in the Elbe department) was dissolved. A new district of Salzwedel in the department of the Lower Elbe was formed from eight cantons (or nine) . The rural canton of Gardelegen was assigned to the Neuhaldensleben district in the Elbe department. In 1811 it had 2075 inhabitants.

After the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig in October 1813, the Kingdom of Westphalia dissolved and the previous Prussian administrative structure was restored. Gardelegen became the seat of the newly created Gardelegen district in the administrative reform of 1816/17 .
