Zienau is a district of the Hanseatic town of Gardelegen in the Altmark district of Salzwedel in Saxony-Anhalt .

geography

The Altmark village of Zienau is located 2½ kilometers southeast of the city center of Gardelegen. In the east is the Zienauer Heide forest area. The Zienauer Heide dry grassland is an extensive natural monument .

history

The Slavic village of Zienau (Wendendorf) was first mentioned in 1279 as a slavicalem villam Sinow sitam juxta Gardelege , which the Margraves Johann, Otto and Konrad transferred to the Cistercian nunnery of Neuendorf . Zienau is a round square village . It was laid out in the shape of a “horseshoe”, so it only had one entrance and an exit. With the airplane you can still see this construction from the air. The “brick barn” stood near Zienau in 1559, in which Johann Georg had the stones for the construction of the Letzlingen hunting lodge made.

Zienau did not have a church and, it seems, never had. Zienau is not to be confused with Sienau near Salzwedel.

Incorporation

On July 1, 1950, the community of Zienau was incorporated into Gardelegen.
