Estedt is a village and a district of the Hanseatic city of Gardelegen in the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel in Saxony-Anhalt .
history
Estedt was first mentioned as Eslestede in 1121 , when the Bishop of Halberstadt Reinhard von Blankenburg transferred the place to the Schöningen Monastery .
In 1273 the Margraves Otto V and Albrecht were in campo apud villam Estede (in the field near the village of Estedt) when the sale of the Bailiwick in Quedlinburg was certified.
In 1345 it is reported that Margrave Ludwig gives the Gardelegen citizens Walter Niendorf and Barthold von Berge (Berghe) court and patronage in villa Estede , which they already had as a pledge from Duke Otto von Braunschweig.
To the southwest of the village are the ruins of the Rösikenturm, an old control room.
In the south of the village there is a windmill that is now used as a residential building.
In April 1945, SS men carried out mass shootings of 122 (according to other sources 108) concentration camp prisoners on a death march in connection with the Gardelegen massacre near the village . The prisoners had previously taken evacuation transports by train from several satellite camps of the Mittelbau-Dora concentration camp and from the Hanover-Stöcken concentration camp to Mieste . A memorial by a collective grave in the local cemetery commemorates them.
