Canton of Brome

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The canton Brome (original spelling: canton Brohme , also Canton Brohme , also canton Nettgau ) was an administrative unit in the Kingdom of Westphalia . The canton existed from December 1807 to November 1808 and then largely became part of the Jübar canton . After the administrative structure of 1807 it belonged to the Salzwedel district of the Elbe department . The canton capital ( chef lieu ) was Brome ( Gifhorn district ) in Lower Saxony , and a little later Nettgau ( Altmark district Salzwedel , Saxony-Anhalt ).

history

With the Peace of Tilsit , Prussia had to cede the Altmark as well as other parts of the country . On August 18, 1807, the Altmark became part of the newly created Kingdom of Westphalia. In 1807 administrative reform was initiated in the areas of the new kingdom. The Altmark, together with other previously Prussian areas (Duchy of Magdeburg), the Amt Calvörde ( Principality of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel ) and smaller Saxon parts of the country, formed the newly created department of the Elbe, which was divided into four districts ( Magdeburg , Neuhaldensleben , Stendal and Salzwedel). After the directory of departments, districts, cantons and communes of the kingdom of 24 December 1807 of Salzwedel district was subdivided into 15 cantons ( cantons ), including the Canton Brome. Nine municipalities belonged to the canton of Brome (different original spellings of the place names in italics):

The incorporation of Altendorf and Brome as well as Kusey and Röwitz ( Amt Klötze ) into the canton Brohme of the Kingdom of Westphalia was unlawful at that time, since these places belonged to the Electorate of Braunschweig-Lüneburg (or Electorate of Hanover), which at that time was not yet part of the Kingdom Westphalen was annexed, but was under French administration. In the sixth volume (Holland and Westphalia) of the newest countries and ethnology: A geographical reading book for all states from 1808, the canton Brohme is referred to as canton Nettgau . The canton's capital is Nettgau, which had 69 inhabitants (!). After this plant, the canton Nettgau (formerly Brohme) had 1,376 inhabitants.

In November 1808, the canton of Brome was dissolved again and the canton of Jübar was created, which now included the places of the dissolved canton of Brome, and which actually belonged to the Kingdom of Westphalia at that time. Only after the formal annexation of the Electorate of Hanover in March 1810 was Brome and Altendorf incorporated, but not as the canton's capital, but as a municipality in the newly created canton of Wittingen . The office Klötze (including Kusey and Röwitz) was incorporated into the Canton of Jübar.

After the dissolution of the Kingdom of Westphalia in October 1813, Brome and Altendorf, Döllnitz, Kusey and Röwitz (Amt Klötze) returned to the Electorate of Hanover, which in 1814 proclaimed itself the Kingdom of Hanover . The office of Klötze (including the named places Döllnitz, Kusey and Röwitz) came to Prussia on January 1, 1816 in an exchange of territory. Döllnitz, Kusey and Röwitz came to the newly founded district of Gardelegen . Böckwitz, Germenau, Gladdenstedt, Hanum, Köbbelitz and Neuferchau were reassigned to the Salzwedel district. On October 30, 1813, a provisional provincial government was set up for the Principality of Lüneburg (to which Brome and Altendorf also belonged). Later the two places came to Landdrostei Lüneburg .
