Canton Beetzendorf

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The canton of Beetzendorf ( IV. 4 ) in the Salzwedel district of the Elbe department of the Kingdom of Westphalia (1812).

The canton Beetzendorf (also Canton Betzendorf or canton de Betzendorf ) was an administrative unit in the Kingdom of Westphalia . The canton existed from 1807 until the kingdom was dissolved in 1813 and, after the administrative structure of 1807, initially belonged to the Salzwedel district of the Elbe department . The canton capital ( chef lieu ) was Beetzendorf in today's Altmarkkreis Salzwedel (Saxony-Anhalt). After the dissolution of this district and in 1810 a new district became Salzwedel in the department of the Nieder-Elbefounded. The department of the Nieder-Elbe was dissolved again in 1811 and two districts of this department were annexed by the French Empire. The new district of Salzwedel and thus also the canton of Beetzendorf remained in the Kingdom of Westphalia and was reassigned to the department of the Elbe. After the dissolution of the Kingdom of Westphalia in October / November 1813, the previous administrative structure was restored in the course of 1814.

history

With the Peace of Tilsit , Prussia had to cede other parts of the country as well as the Altmark , which became part of the newly created Kingdom of Westphalia on August 18, 1807. In December 1807 an administrative reform was initiated in the areas of the new kingdom. The Altmark, together with other previously Prussian areas ( Duchy of Magdeburg ) and smaller Saxon parts of the country, formed the newly created department of the Elbe, which was divided into four districts ( Magdeburg , Neuhaldensleben , Stendal and Salzwedel). After the directory of departments, districts, cantons and communes of the Kingdom in the first volume of the Bulletin des lois du Royaume de Westphalie of 24 December 1807 divided the Salzwedel district in 15 cantons ( cantons ), including the Canton Beetzendorf. The following belonged to the canton of Beetzendorf (different original spellings of the place names in italics):

The communities belonged to the Markbrandenburg Salzwedelische Kreis der Altmark until 1807 . In 1808 the canton of Betzendorf had 3,205 inhabitants.

When the Electorate of Braunschweig-Lüneburg joined the Kingdom of Westphalia in 1810, the three new departments of the North Department , the Department of the Nieder-Elbe and the Department of the Aller were founded on September 1, 1810 . The Salzwedel district (in the Elbe department) was practically dissolved. From eight cantons, including the city and state canton of Salzwedel, a new district of Salzwedel was formed in the Nieder-Elbe department, which in addition to the district of Salzwedel also included the districts of Lüneburg and Harburg. In the north, the cantons of Bretsch and Pollitz of the old Salzwedel district were connected to the Stendal district. In the south, the cantons of Mieste , Gardelegen (city) , Gardelegen (country) and Zichtau came to the Neuhaldensleben district. In return, the new Salzwedel district in the Nieder-Elbe department received the (new) cantons Quickborn , Gartow , Lüchow and Wustrow in the north and the canton Wittingen in the west . On March 5, 1811, the Nieder-Elbe department was dissolved. From the districts of Harburg and Lüneburg, the Département des Bouches de l'Elbe (department of the Elbe estuary) was formed together with other areas and incorporated into the French Empire. The district of Salzwedel (and thus also the canton of Beetzendorf) remained with the Kingdom of Westphalia and was transferred back to the department of the Elbe.

Friedrich Justin Bertuch names 3317 inhabitants for 1810 and an area of 2.97 square miles for the canton of Beetzendorf. The population figures to be found in the literature for the following years are z. In some cases, however, a bit contradictory. Johann Georg Heinrich Hassel in his work Statistical Repertory on the Kingdom of Westphalia for December 1811 the area of the canton Beetzendorf with also 2.97 square miles , the population with 3240 inhabitants. According to the court and state handbook of 1811, the cantons of Beetzendorf and Groß Apenburg had a combined population of 5775. They were jointly administered by the mayor Johann Jakob August Sulfrian. According to Hassel, however, the cantons of Groß Apenburg and Beetzendorf together had 5666 inhabitants. The court and state calendar of 1812 also names the cantons of Beetzendorf and Groß Apenburg a total of 5666 inhabitants.

With the collapse of the Kingdom of Westphalia after the Battle of Leipzig in October / November 1813, the previous Prussian administrative structure was restored and the cantons dissolved again. In 1816 there was a major district reform in which the old Markbrandenburg districts z. T. newly cut, z. Some of them were also dissolved and new circles were created. The municipalities of the canton of Beetzendorf now came to the newly cut Salzwedel district .
