history

The village of Wernstedt near Kalbe an der Milde is first mentioned in 1318 as ville Wernstede . It is enfeoffed here by the then Margrave Woldemar to the Knights von Kröcher, who were friends with the von Warnstedt family. However, the village itself seems to be older, as indicated by the Romanesque stone church in the village , which, due to its typical construction, dates back to the 12th / 13th centuries. Century is to be dated. As with most of the Altmark towns, the exact date of foundation cannot be determined. Further names are: 1321 villam Wernstede , 1340 ville Wernstede , 1593 Warnnstedte , 1687 Warnstede and finally 1804 Wernstedt .

In the southwest of the village on a mountain stood a windmill , next to it was a gravel pit. One kilometer south of the village is the Neu Wernstedt settlement. It emerged from a colony on the former brick factory. The establishment at that time was named that way in 1856 at the request of the landowner Lehmann.

The large stone grave of Wernstedt , located in the forest southwest of the village, was destroyed in the 19th century.

In 1897 Wernstedt was connected to the Altmärkische Kleinbahn network . In 1968 operations on the route to Gardelegen were discontinued, and in 1970 also on the route to Klötze and Kalbe (Milde).

Origin of the place name

According to Jürgen Udolph, the origin could be "settlement, site of Werno". The place could have got its name from the noble family von Warnstedt who immigrated from Warnstedt (Harz) .

Franz Mertens, however, calls the interpretation of the place name uncertain. He suggests: From Anglo-Saxon ver for apartment or from personal names varin of vari for the military .
