Marion is a city in the state of Indiana in the United States of America . In 2010 the state census recorded 29,948 inhabitants. The place is the administrative seat ( English County seat ) of Grant County . The Indiana Wesleyan Evangelical University is based in Marion.

history

In 1812 the Battle of Mississinewa took place in the immediate vicinity as part of the British-American War . In 1831 the settled settlers named the emerging place after Francis Marion , a brigadier general of the South Carolina militia. There was a natural gas boom in the 1920s that increased the population by 22.7%.

Lynchings 1930

In 1930 this was the last case of black lynching in the northern United States . On August 7, 1930, three African American men , Thomas Shipp, Abram Smith and James Cameron, were charged with raping a white girl. As a result, they were taken to the local prison and beaten there. Shipp and Smith were hanged, and Cameron was found innocent by an unknown witness. James Cameron founded the Black Holocaust Museum in Milwaukee in 1980 .

Demographics

According to the 2010 census, 29,948 people in 11,828 households and 6739 families live in the city. By race , 78.1% are White, 14.7% Black or African American , 0.7% Asian, and 0.4% Native American . 2.4% were of other races and 3.6% had two or more races. Regardless of race, 5.5% of the population were Hispanic or Latino .
