Zachary McKenley "Zach" Randolph (born July 16, 1981 in Marion , Indiana ) is a former American basketball player who was active in the NBA from 2001 to 2019 , including for the Portland Trail Blazers and Memphis Grizzlies . Randolph had his most successful time with the Grizzlies and was voted NBA All-Star twice .

Career

Randolph played a college year for the Michigan State Spartans before deciding to enroll for the NBA draft . Randolph was selected in the 2001 draft by the Portland Trail Blazers in 19th place and was initially a substitute behind Rasheed Wallace . As a rookie , he had a difficult first season. The Blazers team of the early 2000s came to be known as the "Jail Blazers" because of many off-field problems. In his first two years as a professional, Randolph played 118 games, averaging 8 points and 4 rebounds , and played in 8 playoff games.

His breakthrough came in the 2003/04 season . The Portland management parted ways with many weak or dissatisfied players this season. When Rasheed Wallace left, Randolph became a new starter in the power forward position. He now scored 20 points and 10 rebounds per game, won the NBA Most Improved Player Award for Most Improved Player , and was rewarded with a lucrative contract of $ 84 million for six years.

After missing nearly 40 games due to injury the following year, Randolph played an impressive 2006/07 season when he reached 23 points and 10 rebounds per game. However, the Blazers were among the most unsuccessful teams in the league. With the arrival of LaMarcus Aldridge and Greg Oden , it was Randolph who had to make way for the young player.

In June 2007, the power forward was brought to New York by New York Knicks coach Isiah Thomas and, together with center Eddy Curry and playmaker Stephon Marbury, was supposed to give the Knicks team a new shine. This plan failed miserably in 2007/08, as the Knicks won just 23 of 82 games this season and Randolph scored a disappointing 17 points per game for him.

In November 2008, he joined the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for Cuttino Mobley and Tim Thomas . There he played until the end of the 2008/2009 season and scored an average of 20 points per game. Randolph was suspended following a blow to Lou Amundson . In July 2009 it was announced that the Clippers would give Zach Randolph to the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for Quentin Richardson .

In Memphis, Randolph became an all-star . In 2010 and 2013 he was nominated for the NBA All-Star Game and in 2011 he was elected to the All-NBA Third Team . Together with Mike Conley Jr. and Marc Gasol , the Grizzlies developed into the winning team and reached the play-offs every time between 2011 and 2015, and even the Conference Finals in 2013. In the summer of 2014, Randolph extended his contract with the Grizzlies by two years for $ 20 million. On February 20, he achieved a triple-double for the first time in his career. In the 113: 102 victory of the Grizzlies over the Los Angeles Clippers, Randolph scored 25 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists.

The following season, Randolph had not played regularly from the start for a long time, as coach David Fizzdale wanted him off the bench as a scoring option. With 73 games and only 5 of them on the starting line-up, he still put on an average of 14.1 points, 8.2 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game.

In the summer of 2017, Randolph left the Grizzlies to join the Sacramento Kings . There he signed a two-year contract worth $ 24 million. As a thank you for the many years in Memphis, the Grizzlies have decided not to give away his jersey with the number 50.

With the Kings he got 14.5 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.2 assists in the 2017/18 season . As part of the rebuilding of the Kings, Randolph was not used in a single NBA game in the 2018/19 season . In February 2019, Randolph moved to the Dallas Mavericks as part of a swap deal , but was fired from the Mavericks shortly after the transfer and announced his retirement from active sports at Christmas 2019.
