Maurice Edward Cheeks (born September 8, 1956 in Chicago , Illinois ) is a retired American basketball player . Between 1978 and 1993 he played in the NBA for the teams of the Philadelphia 76ers , New York Knicks , San Antonio Spurs , Atlanta Hawks and New Jersey Nets . Cheeks is 1.85 m tall and played in the position of point guard .
Cheeks was a member of the Sixers championship team around Moses Malone and Julius Erving in 1983 . When he retired, he was the steal record holder . Most recently, he was a trainer with the Portland Trail Blazers , from which he was released on March 2, 2005 .
After the active career
Cheeks began his career as an assistant coach with the 76ers after playing basketball. His first post as head coach was with the Portland Trail Blazers . On April 25, 2003 , before the Trail Blazers game against the Dallas Mavericks , he helped 13-year-old Natalie Gilbert, who was supposed to sing the US national anthem but had forgotten the lyrics. Cheeks rushed over to her and they finished the anthem together, with the entire Rose Garden Arena audience joining in. Cheeks and Gilbert got standing ovations at the end .
In the summer of 2013, Cheeks became the new head coach of the Detroit Pistons . Previously, he was employed by the 76ers in the same position alongside the Portland Trail Blazers . At the Pistons, Cheeks was released prematurely on February 9 due to a lack of athletic success. In the 2015/16 season , he was hired as an assistant coach at Oklahoma City Thunder, as he had done from 2010 to 2013 .
On March 31, 2018, Cheek's induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a player was announced.
