Cuttino Rashawn Mobley (born September 1, 1975 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is a former American basketball player . He played from 1998 to 2008 in the American professional basketball league NBA .
Career
After four years at the University of Rhode Island , Cuttino Mobley was elected 41st by the Houston Rockets in the 1998 NBA Draft . Mobley started for the Rockets in the position of Shooting Guard and together with point guard Steve Francis formed one of the best backcourt duos in the NBA. Despite good individual performances, he failed to qualify for the playoffs again with the Houston Rockets for a long time after his rookie season in 1998/99. It wasn't until 2004 that the Rockets reached the playoffs again, but were eliminated in the first round against the favorite Los Angeles Lakers after five games.
In the summer of 2004, Cuttino Mobley was transferred to Orlando Magic together with Steve Francis and Kelvin Cato . In return, the Houston Rockets received the two-time and reigning scoring champion Tracy McGrady . After 23 games for the Magic, Mobley was traded against Doug Christie at the Sacramento Kings . On July 14, 2005, he left Orlando and signed a five-year deal worth $ 42 million with the Los Angeles Clippers . Together with Sam Cassell and Elton Brand , Mobley was able to lead the Clippers back to the playoffs in 2006 after nine years and for the fourth time in their history. In the first round, the Clippers defeated the Denver Nuggets in five games, before they were eliminated in the second round just after seven games against Phoenix Suns for MVP Steve Nash . After the Clippers missed the playoffs in the next two years, it was decided to give Mobley and Tim Thomas to the New York Knicks against Zach Randolph and Mardy Collins .
Heart problems and end of career
On December 10, 2008, it was announced that Cuttino Mobley was retiring due to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy , a heart disease. It is the same illness that former Boston Celtics player Reggie Lewis died of in 1993. On November 17, 2011, it was announced that Mobley was suing the New York Knicks for damages. In his opinion, he was pushed to the end of his career by the club doctors of the Knicks and would have suffered emotional and financial damage as a result.
