Michael "Mike" Alex Conley Jr. (born October 11, 1987 in Fayetteville , Arkansas ) is an American basketball player who is under contract with the Utah Jazz in the NBA . Before that, he worked for the Memphis Grizzlies for a long time . Conley Jr. is the son of track and field athlete and Olympic gold medalist Mike Conley Sr.
Career
High school and college
During high school, Conley and Greg Oden played on the same team. Together they and their team won the state championship three times in a row. Back in 2005, Oden and Conley announced that they would go basketball for the Ohio State University basketball team in 2006 .
With the Buckeyes Conley convinced in his freshman year and led the "Big Ten Conference" with 6.1 assists per game. During the NCAA -Turniers Conley, Oden and led Daequan Cook her team to the finals of the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship , where you feel the basketball team of the Florida Gators to Joakim Noah , Corey Brewer and Al Horford had to admit defeat. Memphis Grizzlies (2007 to 2019)
In the 2007 NBA Draft , Conley was selected by the Memphis Grizzlies in fourth place after Greg Oden, Kevin Durant and Al Horford . In his debut season with the Grizzlies Conley convinced with good values in points and assists. The following year Conley began under coach Marc Iavarorn as a starter, but lost his starting place to Kyle Lowry . By the middle of the season, Conley had only 7.5 points and 3.4 assists per game.
After Lionel Hollins was named the new Grizzlies head coach and Lowry was transferred to the Houston Rockets , Conley got his starting place back and improved his statistics in the remaining games to 14.8 points and 5.7 assists. During the 2009/10 and 2010/11 seasons , Conley was on the field in all games from the start. With career highs in points, assists and steals , Conley reached the play-offs for the first time with the Grizzlies 2011 . Despite the injury to Grizzlie star player Rudy Gay , the Grizzlies achieved a sensation during the play-offs when they defeated the best team in the West, the San Antonio Spurs , in the first round. The team was eliminated in the round after that against the Oklahoma City Thunder .
In 2013, Conley was named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team. In 2014 he won the NBA Sportsmanship Award due to his fairness . On December 13, Conley scored a career record with 36 points against the Philadelphia 76ers . With the Grizzlies, he also reached the playoffs in 2015, but retired with the team in the first round.
In the 2015–16 season, Conley suffered a foot injury and was out for the remainder of the season and the playoffs. Conley won the NBA Sportsmanship Award for the second time in 2016.
In the summer of 2016, Conley signed a $ 153 million five-year deal with the Grizzlies. The total amount of the contract is one of the highest in NBA history that will be paid out to a player. In the 2017-18 season he suffered a severe Achilles injury and only played 12 of 82 possible games of the season.
He returned recovered to the 2018-19 season and achieved his best career value with 21.1 points per game. Among other things, he set a career record of 40 points against the Portland Trail Blazers on March 5, 2019 . Utah Jazz (since 2019)
The Grizzlies planned a rebuild and gave Conley to the Utah Jazz shortly before the 2019 NBA Draft . In return, Kyle Korver , Jae Crowder , Grayson Allen and Draftpicks moved to the Grizzlies. Conley leaves the Grizzlies after 12 years as their all-time leader in completed games, points, assists, steals and three-point throws hit.
