Rudy Carlton Gay Jr. (born August 17, 1986 in Baltimore , Maryland ) is an American basketball player who has been a member of the National Basketball Association (NBA) since 2006 . He is currently under contract with the San Antonio Spurs .

High school and college careers

In his youth, Gay first played at the Eastern Technical High School in Baltimore for two years, until he switched to the ambitious Arch Bishop Spalding High School in the summer of 2002 because of his talent , where he again spent two years. By the time he left high school he was known as one of the best players of his class and received a slew of awards and prizes. Among other things, he was elected to the McDonald's All-American Team , which is composed of the best high school players from all over the United States.

Rudy Gay then received a scholarship from the University of Connecticut , one of the best basketball universities in North America. In his sophomore year at college , which he played with great success, he was honored with a nomination for the best college player in the USA. This season he led his college team, the UConn Huskies, with 15.2 points per game to a 30: 3 record, until they lost in extra time to the surprise team of the George Mason Patriots from Virginia 84:86. Despite the disappointing end of his sophomore year of college, Gay decided to drop out of college to enroll in the NBA draft .

NBA career

Memphis Grizzlies (2006-2013)

The Houston Rockets selected the highly traded Rudy Gay as the 8th pick in the 2006 NBA Draft , only to transfer the established Shane Battier to the Memphis Grizzlies that same night together with Stromile Swift .

In his first NBA year, Gay managed to shine a few times and with an average of 10.8 points and 4.5  rebounds was not only one of the best players on his team, but also one of the best rookies in the NBA. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team . But not only did he draw attention to himself with his strong performances, Rudy caused a stir with his very spectacular dunks .

With the Grizzlies he established himself over the years as the team's top scorer and scored about 19 points per game during this time. In 2011 he reached the playoffs for the first time with the Grizzlies , but had to sit out due to injury. In 2012 they reached the playoffs again, but where they were eliminated in the first round.

Toronto Raptors (2013)

In January 2013, Gay was transferred to the Toronto Raptors as part of a three-team swap . In return, José Calderón joined the Detroit Pistons and Tayshaun Prince joined the Memphis Grizzlies . With the Raptors, he missed the playoffs.

Sacramento Kings (2013-2017)

Gay only ran for the Raptors until November 2013. In early December he was transferred from the Toronto Raptors to the Sacramento Kings . In this trade, in addition to Gay, Center Aaron Gray and Forward Quincy Acy were given to Sacramento. The Raptors got Greivis Vásquez , John Salmons , Patrick Patterson and Chuck Hayes in return . Previously, Gay was the captain of the Raptors' team for the first games of the 2013-14 season .

The Kings did not want to be successful either and the playoffs were missed. Nevertheless, on November 19, 2014, he extended his contract with the team by three years and $ 40 million. Gay was active for the Kings until 2017, missing much of the 2016/17 season due to a foot injury. Despite the injury, Gay stepped out of his ongoing contract in Sacramento in 2017 in order to accept a new contract.

San Antonio Spurs (Since 2017)

After various teams submitted offers, Gay decided to sign a two-year contract with the San Antonio Spurs for $ 17 million in July 2017 . At the Spurs, Gay initially earned less money, but came to a team that had significantly better chances of sporting success in the league.

National team

Gay was a member of the United States national basketball team . With these he won the Basketball World Cup in 2010 and 2014 .
