The George Mason University (also called GMU or Mason ) is a state university in the suburbs of Washington DC in the area of the US state Virginia with headquarters in Fairfax . The college has locations in Arlington , Fairfax County, and Prince William County . With 30,714 students (2009), it is the largest university in Virginia, ahead of Virginia Commonwealth University . In its short history, GMU has produced two Nobel Prize winners.

Founded in 1957 as the campus of the University of Virginia , George Mason University became independent in 1972. The college is named after George Mason , the father of the Bill of Rights .

As a result of a transparency initiative by students in 2017, the university was forced to show donations from donors. Accordingly, the George Mason University profited sustainably from donations, expanded into an institution of national standing and became a center of the teachings of economic liberalism . Donors like brothers Charles and David H. Koch had bought access to the university's committees with millions in donations since the 1990s. The Koch brothers financed the Mercatus Center think tank on campus and apparently had an influence on the selection of teaching staff. In total, her grants to the university were estimated at $ 50 million. The revelations prompted University President Ángel Cabrera to assure that donors would no longer be able to get seats on selection committees in the future.

The Center for Secure Information Systems (CSIS), part of the Volgenau School of Engineering , is the oldest institute specializing in security at a university in the United States. It regularly achieves top positions in university rankings. In 2014, in a study commissioned by Hewlett-Packard , it was ranked seventh among all institutes that deal with information security in the USA. The National Security Agency (NSA) also recognized it as a “National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance / Cyber Defense” for research and teaching.

In the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education from February 2016, GMU is in the highest-rated group of the "Doctoral Universities: Highest Research Activity" in the United States.

The GMU has agreements on student exchange with the Technical University of Munich , the Free University of Berlin and the University of Oxford, among others .

The GMU sports teams call themselves Patriots . The university is a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference .
