Abner Linwood Holton Jr. (born September 21, 1923 in Big Stone Gap , Wise County , Virginia ) is a former American politician . He was governor of the state of Virginia from 1970 to 1974 .

Early years and political advancement

Linwood Holton attended Washington and Lee University until 1944 . He then studied until 1949 at the law school of Harvard University . During the Second World War he was in the US Navy with the submarines. Later he was a member of the Navy Reserve.

Holton became a member of the Republican Party and the party executive in Virginia. In 1960 and 1968 he was a delegate at the Republican National Conventions , each of which Richard Nixon was nominated as the party's presidential candidate. Holton was not enthusiastic about the partisanship of some disaffected Democrats . Among them was Mills E. Godwin , who would become both his predecessor and his successor as governor. Godwin had defeated Holton in the 1965 gubernatorial election.

Governor of Virginia

In 1969 Holton was elected as the new governor of his state. He was the first Republican governor of Virginia since Gilbert Carlton Walker , who had served between 1869 and 1874. Holton took office on January 17, 1970. His four-year tenure in Virginia was relatively quiet; But it was overshadowed by the events of the Watergate affair in federal politics. Holton was a member of several governors' associations.

After his time Governor Holton worked as a lawyer at the law firm Hogan and Hartson in Washington . In 1978 he ran unsuccessfully for his party's nomination for a seat in the US Senate . In later years he alienated himself from his party, which was adopting an increasingly conservative course. For this reason, he has supported some Democratic Party candidates in various elections.

Linwood Holton has four children with his wife, Virginia Harrison Rogers, including Anne, wife of Democratic Senator Tim Kaine , who is his party's 2016 vice presidential candidate.
