John Tyler Sr. (born February 28, 1747 in Charles City County , Colony of Virginia , †  January 6, 1813 in Charles City , Virginia ) was an American politician ( Democratic Republican Party ), judge , plantation owner and governor of Virginia . He was the father of the governor of Virginia and later tenth President of the United States , John Tyler .

Tyler studied law in Williamsburg at the College of William & Mary , where his friend Thomas Jefferson was his roommate ( Patrick Henry was also a friend), and practiced in the district court. After the Declaration of Independence , he was a member and speaker of the Virginia House of Representatives . In 1786 he was appointed Judge of the Maritime Court and then Judge on the Court of Appeals of Virginia. After the restructuring of the judicial system, he became a judge of the Supreme Court. In 1808 Tyler was elected governor of Virginia, and in 1811 he succeeded Cyrus Griffin as a judge in the federal district court for the Virginia district. He died on January 6, 1813.
