John N. Dalton

John Nichols Dalton (born July 11, 1931 in Emporia , Virginia , † July 30, 1986 in Richmond , Virginia) was an American politician and governor of the state of Virginia from 1978 to 1982 .

Early years and political advancement

John Dalton studied at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg until 1953 . After a subsequent law degree at the University of Virginia , he made his law exam there in 1957. He then served as a first lieutenant in the US Army .

Dalton became a member of the Republican Party . He was first elected to the Virginia House of Representatives in 1965 . Afterwards he was confirmed three times by the voters as a member of this chamber. In 1972 he entered the State Senate . From 1974 to 1978 he was Deputy Governor of Governor Mills E. Godwin , and he was elected to succeed him in 1977.

Governor of Virginia

John Dalton began his four-year term on January 14, 1978. During this time he was, among other things, chairman of the Association of Republican Governors and on the board of the National Governors Association . He was also a member of numerous other associations and commissions. He promoted the economic growth of his state and reformed the administration. During his term of office, a legal dispute with the federal government over the question of desegregation in higher schools was also settled.

Another résumé

Dalton's tenure ended on January 16, 1982. Although he was a non-smoker, he developed lung cancer , of which he died on July 30, 1986 at the Medical College of Virginia , Richmond. The governor and his wife Edwina Jeanette Panzer had four children.
