William Troy "Bill" Bolling (born June 15, 1957 in Sistersville , Tyler County , West Virginia ) is an American politician . Between 2006 and 2014 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Virginia .

Career

Until 1978, Bill Bolling studied political science at the University of Charleston . In 1981 he moved to Mechanicsville , Hanover County , Virginia, where he worked for an insurance company. Politically, he joined the Republican Party . Between 1991 and 1995 he was a member of the Hanover County County Council; from 1996 to 2005 he was a member of the Virginia Senate . There he was a member of several committees and sub-committees.

In 2005, Bolling was elected lieutenant governor of Virginia. He held this office after a re-election between 2006 and 2014. He was Deputy to the Democratic Governor Tim Kaine and Chairman of the State Senate. Since 2010, he served under Republican Bob McDonnell . In the 2012 presidential election , he led Mitt Romney's campaign team for Virginia. Bolling originally planned to run for governor in 2013. For this, internal party agreements had been made since 2009. However, since some of his political friends decided differently in the meantime and this caused tensions, Bolling decided not to run. The Republicans lost the election; with Ralph Northam a Democrat was elected the new lieutenant governor.
