Justin Edward Fairfax (* 17th February 1979 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party and, since January 2018 Deputy Governor of Virginia .

Life

After studying public policy at Duke University , he initially worked in various roles related to politics. Among other things, he worked for Tipper Gore , the wife of the then US Vice President Al Gore . He also served as a staff member on various committees of the US Senate . Fairfax later went on to study law . He then practiced in Virginia as a lawyer and later moved to the office of a US federal attorney . After Fairfax had already been involved in various election campaigns for the Democrats , he unsuccessfully applied for the post of Attorney General in 2013 in primary .

In the 2017 election he ran for lieutenant governor of Virginia and was also nominated by his party. In the actual election on November 7, 2017, he won against Republican Jill Vogel with 52.7% of the vote. Fairfax took up this position in January 2018 as the successor to his party colleague Ralph Northam . He is Northam's deputy, who was also able to prevail in the gubernatorial election taking place at the same time (governor and lieutenant governor are elected separately in Virginia). Since the election of Governor Douglas Wilder in 1989, Fairfax has become the first African American to serve in a high-level government office in the state.

In February 2019, Fairfax was accused of sexual abuse by two women. Fairfax denied the allegations.

Fairfax has been married to his wife Cerine since 2006 and has two children.
