Donald Sternoff "Don" Beyer Jr. (born June 20, 1950 in Trieste , Free Territory of Trieste ) is an American politician and diplomat . Between 1990 and 1998 he was Lieutenant Governor of Virginia ; since 2015 he has represented this state in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Don Beyer was born in Italy as the son of an American army officer. He grew up in Washington, DC , where he graduated from Gonzaga College High School . He then studied economics at Williams College in Massachusetts until 1972 . He was also at Dartmouth College . Professionally, he worked as a car dealer. In 2006 and 2007 he was Chairman of the American Association of Car Dealers.

Politically, Beyer joined the Democratic Party . In August 1996 he took part as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago , at which President Bill Clinton was nominated for re-election. In 1989 he was elected lieutenant governor of Virginia alongside Douglas Wilder . He held this post after re-election between 1990 and 1998. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . He was also a member of various commissions at the same time. Since 1994, he served under Republican Governor George Allen .

In 1997 Beyer ran unsuccessfully for the office of governor of his state. In 2004 he was the financial director of Howard Dean's unsuccessful election campaign in that year's presidential election. In 2008 he supported Barack Obama's successful election campaign . In 2009 he appointed him to succeed Peter R. Coneway as Ambassador of the United States in Switzerland and Liechtenstein . He held this office from August 5, 2009 to May 29, 2013.

In January 2014 Don Beyer announced his candidacy for the eighth congressional electoral district of his state, in which Jim Moran no longer ran for re-election. On June 10, he prevailed in his party's primary elections. In the November election, he won against Republican Micah Edmond and was able to take his seat in Congress on January 3, 2015 . He defended his office in the congressional elections in 2016 and 2018 against the Republican rival candidates Charles Hernick and Thomas Oh.
