Edward W. Saunders

Edward Watts Saunders (born October 20, 1860 in Rocky Mount , Virginia , †  December 16, 1921 there ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1906 and 1920 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Edward Saunders enjoyed a private education and then graduated from Bellevue High School in Bedford County . This was followed by studies at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville until 1882 . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1883, he began to work in this profession in Rocky Mount. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1887 and 1901 he was a member of the Virginia House of Representatives , whose president he was from 1899 to 1901 as the successor to John F. Ryan . From 1901 to 1906 he served as a judge in the fourth and seventh judicial districts of his state.

After the resignation of Representative Claude A. Swanson , Saunders was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , at the by-election due for the fifth seat of Virginia , where he took up his new mandate on November 6, 1906. After six re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his resignation on February 29, 1920 . During this time the First World War fell . In 1913 the 16th and 17th amendments were ratified.

Saunders' resignation came after his appointment as a judge on the Supreme Court of Appeals of Virginia . He held this post until his death on December 16, 1921 in Rocky Mount, where he was also buried.
