John Robert Brown

John Robert Brown (born January 14, 1842 in Snow Creek , Franklin County , Virginia , †  August 4, 1927 in Martinsville , Virginia) was an American politician . Between 1887 and 1889 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Brown attended private schools in his home country. During the Civil War he served in the Confederation Army . He then worked from 1870 together with his father in the tobacco shop in Shady Grove . In 1882 he moved to Martinsville, where he also worked in the tobacco business. He also got into banking and politics. From 1884 he was mayor of Martinsville.

In the congressional election of 1886 Brown was elected as a candidate for the Republican Party in the fifth constituency of Virginia in the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded George Cabell on March 4, 1887 . Until March 3, 1889 he was able to complete a legislative period in Congress . In 1896, he ran unsuccessfully to return to Congress. He filed an objection to the outcome of the election without success. After his time in the US House of Representatives, John Brown returned to the tobacco business. He died in Martinsville on August 4, 1927.
