George Tankard Garrison

George Tankard Garrison (born January 14, 1835 in Accomack County , Virginia , †  November 14, 1889 in Accomac , Virginia) was an American politician . Between 1881 and 1885 he twice represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Garrison attended Dickinson College in Carlisle ( Pennsylvania ) until 1853 . After a subsequent law degree at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and his admission as a lawyer in 1857, he began to work in Accomack in this profession. During the Civil War he served as a common soldier in the Confederation Army . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . He served in the Virginia House of Representatives from 1861 to 1863 ; between 1863 and 1865 he was a member of the State Senate . After the war he practiced as a lawyer again. He also worked in agriculture. In 1870 he became a judge in the eighth and then 17th judicial districts of Virginia.

In the 1880 congressional election , Garrison was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the first constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded Richard Lee Turberville Beale on March 4, 1881 . Since he lost to Robert Murphy Mayo in 1882 , he was only able to serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1883 . Garrison appealed against the 1882 election results. When this was granted, he was able to take over the mandate of Mayo again on March 20, 1884 and end the current legislative period in Congress by March 3, 1885.

After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Garrison worked again as a lawyer. He then became a district judge in Accomack County. He died in Accomac on November 14, 1889.
