Owen Bradford Pickett (* 31 August 1930 in Richmond , Virginia ; † 27. October 2010 in Virginia Beach , Virginia) was an American politician of the Democratic Party .

life and career

Pickett studied at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg , where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1952 . At the Law School of the University of Richmond he received his Bachelor of Laws in 1955 . That same year he was accepted into the Virginia State Bar and practiced as a lawyer in Richmond.

Pickett served in the Virginia House of Representatives from 1972 to 1986 . During this time he served from 1980 to 1982 as chairman of the Democratic Party in Virginia. In 1986 he was elected to Congress , where he represented the state of Virginia in the United States House of Representatives from January 3, 1987 to January 3, 2001 . In the elections to the 107th Congress in 2000, he decided not to run again.
