John Strode Barbour Junior

John Strode Barbour junior (born December 29, 1820 in Catalpa , Virginia , † May 14, 1892 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ). He represented the state of Virginia in the US Senate .

Professional career

John S. Barbour was born at Catalpa near Culpeper in Culpeper County and is the son of the politician of the same name . He attended public schools and later studied law at the University of Virginia at Charlottesville . He received his license in 1841 and began working in Culpeper. From 1852 to 1881 he was President of the Orange and Alexandria Railroad .

Political career

His first political office was the election to the Virginia House of Representatives in 1847, where he was active until 1851. As a member of the Democratic Party, he was elected to the 47th Congress in the House of Representatives, where he could stay for two more conventions. He presided over the District of Colombia Committee for the 48th and 49th Congresses . He turned down re-election in 1886 and was elected to the Senate on March 4, 1889 three years later . He was a Senator for Virginia until his death on May 14, 1892.

Barbour was buried in the Poplar Hill cemetery in Prince George's County , Maryland .
