James Stephenson (politician)

James Stephenson (born March 20, 1764 in Gettysburg , Province of Pennsylvania , †  August 7, 1833 in Martinsburg , Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1803 and 1825 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives several times .

Career

Nothing is known about James Stephenson's childhood and adolescence. He moved to Martinsburg in what is now West Virginia . In 1791 he took part in an Indian war under General St. Clair . He later embarked on a political career as a member of the Federalist Party . Between 1800 and 1803 he was a member of the Virginia House of Representatives . In the 1802 congressional elections , Stephenson was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded David Holmes on March 4, 1803 . Until March 3, 1805, he was able to complete a legislative period in Congress . During this time, the Louisiana Purchase made by President Thomas Jefferson fell, which considerably expanded the territory of the United States. In 1804 the twelfth amendment was ratified.

In 1806 and 1807, Stephenson was again a member of the Virginia State Parliament. In the elections of 1808 he was re-elected to Congress in the second district, where he replaced John Morrow on March 4, 1809 , who had been his successor there four years earlier. Until March 3, 1811, Stephenson could spend another term in the US House of Representatives. After the death of MP Thomas Van Swearingen , Stephenson was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives at the by-election due for the second seat, where he took up his mandate on October 28, 1822. After re-election in the ninth electoral district, he could remain in Congress until March 3, 1825.

After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, James Stephenson was no longer politically active. He died on August 7, 1833 in Martinsburg.
