Gerald E. "Gerry" Connolly (born March 30, 1950 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is an American politician . Since 2009 he has represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Gerry Connolly attended Maryknoll College in Illinois until 1971 and then studied at Harvard University until 1979 . Between 1979 and 1989 he worked for the Foreign Affairs Committee of the US Senate . He also worked in the technology industry and was director of a non-profit organization . Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . Between 1995 and 2003 he was a member of the Fairfax County County Council in Virginia; from 2004 to 2008 he headed this body.

In the 2008 congressional election , Connolly was elected to the Eleventh constituency of Virginia in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Thomas M. Davis, who had since resigned, on January 3, 2009 . As he was re-elected in all subsequent elections, including the one in 2016, he can continue to exercise his mandate today. His latest legislative term runs until January 3, 2019. He belongs or was a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform . He is or was a member of four sub-committees and the Congressional Arts Caucus . He was previously a member of the Budget Committee and three of its sub-committees.
