Charles Clement Johnston

Charles Clement Johnston (born April 30, 1795 in Farmville , Prince Edward County , Virginia , †  June 17, 1832 in Alexandria , Virginia) was an American politician . In 1831 and 1832 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Charles Johnston was the elder brother of the Confederate States Congressman and General , Joseph E. Johnston (1807-1891), and the uncle of US Senator John W. Johnston (1818-1889). He was homeschooled. In 1811 he and his parents moved to the vicinity of Abingdon . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1818, he began to work there in this profession. In the 1820s he joined the movement around the future President Andrew Jackson and became a member of the Democratic Party founded by this in 1828 .

In the 1830 congressional election , Johnston was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 22nd  constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded Joseph Draper on March 4, 1831 . He could only exercise this mandate until June 17, 1831. That day he drowned in an accident in the port of Alexandria. As a result, his predecessor Draper was elected as his successor.
