William Terry

William Terry (born August 14, 1824 in Amherst County , Virginia , †  September 5, 1888 in Wytheville , Virginia) was an American politician . Between 1871 and 1877 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives twice .

Career

William Terry attended the public schools of his home country and then studied until 1848 at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville . After that he worked as a teacher for some time. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1851, he began to work in this profession in Wytheville. He also got into the newspaper business. Terry served as an officer in the Confederate Army during the Civil War . He rose to brigadier general. He took part in several battles and was wounded several times. After the war he practiced as a lawyer again. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

In the congressional elections of 1870 Terry was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the eighth constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded James K. Gibson on March 4, 1871 . Since he was no longer nominated for re-election by his party in 1872, he was initially only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1873 . In the elections of 1874 Terry was re-elected to Congress in the ninth district of his state, where he replaced Rees Bowen on March 4, 1875 . Bus to March 3, 1877, he was able to spend another term in Congress. In 1876 he was no longer up for re-election.

After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, William Terry worked again as a lawyer. In June 1880 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Cincinnati . He died on September 5, 1888 near Wytheville when he drowned while trying to cross a river.
