Career

Nathaniel Claiborne came from a well-known family of politicians. He was the brother of William CC Claiborne († 1817), who was among other things Governor of Louisiana and US Senator . Nathaniel Claiborne was also a nephew of Congressman Thomas Claiborne (1749-1812) and an uncle of John Francis Hamtramck Claiborne (1809-1884), who represented the state of Mississippi in Congress . He was also the grandfather of James Robert Claiborne (1882-1944), who sat for Missouri in the US House of Representatives. In addition, there were other somewhat distant relatives who held high political offices, including in Congress.

Claiborne attended public schools in his home country and then worked in agriculture. At the same time, in line with family tradition, he also embarked on a political career. Between 1810 and 1812 he was a member of the Virginia House of Representatives ; from 1821 and 1825 he was a member of the State Senate . In the 1820s he joined the movement around the future President Andrew Jackson . In the congressional election of 1824 Claiborne was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the seventh constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded Jabez Leftwich on March 4, 1825 . After five re-elections, he was able to complete six legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1837 . From 1835 he represented the third district of his state there as the successor to William S. Archer . Since President Jackson took office in 1829, there has been heated debate inside and outside of Congress about its policies. It was about the controversial enforcement of the Indian Removal Act , the conflict with the state of South Carolina , which culminated in the nullification crisis , and the banking policy of the president.

Nathaniel Claiborne distanced himself from Jackson in the 1830s and joined the opposition National Republican Party . In his last term in office he represented this party in Congress. From 1831 to 1837 he was chairman of the election committee. In 1836 he was not re-elected. After his time in the US House of Representatives, Claiborne returned to farming. Politically, he no longer appeared. He died near Rocky Mount on August 15, 1859.
