Lewis F. Payne

Lewis Franklin Payne Jr. (born July 9, 1945 in Amherst , Amherst County , Virginia ) is an American politician . Between 1988 and 1997 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Lewis Payne attended Amherst County High School until 1963 . He then graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington until 1967 . Between 1968 and 1970 he served in the US Army , whose reserve he was still a member. After serving in the military, he continued his education until 1973 with a study at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville . After that he acted among other things as president of a small construction company. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

After the death of MP Dan Daniel , Payne was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the due by-election for the fifth seat of Virginia , where he took up his new mandate on June 14, 1988. After four re-elections, he could remain in Congress until January 3, 1997 . There he was temporarily chairman of the committee for internal and insular affairs.

In 1996 he renounced another candidacy. Instead, he ran unsuccessfully for the office of lieutenant governor of Virginia. Since then he has been working for a consulting firm.
