James F. Epes

James Fletcher Epes (born May 23, 1842 near Blackstone , Nottoway County , Virginia , † August 24, 1910 ibid) was an American lawyer and politician ( Democratic Party ). He was a cousin of Sydney Parham Epes and William Bacon Oliver , both Congressmen .

Career

James Fletcher Epes attended private schools and the University of Virginia at Charlottesville . During the Civil War he served in the Confederate Army in Company E, 3rd Virginia Cavalry . After the war, he graduated from the Law Department of Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia in 1867 . He was admitted to the bar that same year and then began practicing at Nottoway Court House, Virginia. He also pursued agricultural activities. Then he served as a prosecutor in Nottoway County between 1870 and 1883.

Epes was elected to the 52nd US Congress and re - elected to the subsequent 53rd US Congress . He served in the US House of Representatives from March 4, 1891 to March 3, 1895. In 1894, Epes decided against running for the 54th US Congress . After his tenure he returned to his plantation ( The Old Place ) near Blackstone (Virginia), where he lived until his death in 1910. He was buried in Lake View Cemetery .
