Nottoway County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . In 2000 , the county had 15,725 people and a population density of 19 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Nottoway .

Nottoway County is located just southeast of the geographic center of Virginia and has an area of 819 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Amelia County , Dinwiddie County , Brunswick County , Lunenburg County, and Cumberland County .

As of the 2000 census , Nottoway County had a population of 15,725. Of these, 1,656 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 5,664 households and 3,885 families. The population density was 19 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 57.16 percent white, 40.56 percent African American, 0.13 percent Native American, 0.39 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.01 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.72 percent were from two or more races. 1.58 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 5,664 households, 29.9 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 48.6 percent were married couples living together, 15.4 percent were single mothers, 31.4 percent were non-families, 27.6 percent were single households and 14.2 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.00.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 22.9 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 8.1 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.3 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.6 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 17.1 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 106.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 106.6 men statistically.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 30,866 , and the median income for a family is $ 39,625. Males had a median income of $ 28,533 versus $ 19,718 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,552. 15.5 percent of families and 20.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 27.7 percent were children or adolescents under the age of 18 and 18.4 percent were people over 65 years of age.
