Brunswick County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 18,419 people and a population density of 13 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Lawrenceville . The county also claims to be the origin of the original Brunswick Stew .

Brunswick County is located in southeast Virginia, bordering North Carolina to the south and has an area of 1,475 square kilometers, of which eight square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Dinwiddie County , Greensville County , Mecklenburg County , Lunenburg County, and Nottoway County .
history
It was formed from Prince George County in 1720 and expanded from parts of Isle of Wight County and Surry County in 1732. It was named after the Duchy of Braunschweig-Lüneburg in Germany, as one of the titles of the British Kings from the House of Hanover was the Duke of Brunswick-Luneburg .

According to the 2000 census , Brunswick County's population was 18,419. Of these, 2,901 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 6,277 households and 4,312 families. The population density was 13 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 41.99 percent white, 56.85 percent African American, 0.09 percent Native American, 0.22 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.34 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.51 percent were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.25 percent of the population.
Of the 6,277 households, 27.4 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 46.9 percent were married couples living together, 16.6 percent were single mothers, 31.3 percent were non-families, 27.6 percent were single households, and 13.3 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.00 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 20.5 percent of residents under the age of 18, 9.9 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 30.7 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 24.4 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 14.5 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 113.1 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 115.4 men.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 31,288 , and the median income for a family was $ 38,354. Males had a median income of $ 26,924 versus $ 20,550 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,890. 13.2 percent of families and 16.5 percent of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 20.1 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 19.5 percent were people over 65 years of age.
