Recipe

The recipe for Brunswick Stew is very different from region to region. Basically, however, the stew is based on a tomato , to which various types of lima beans , corn and other vegetables as well as various types of meat are added. Most of the recipes considered authentic include gray squirrel or rabbit meat. However, poultry , pork or beef are also common these days . Some variants give the stew a distinctive smoky taste.

origin

A debate over the origin of Brunswick Stew is currently raging between the city of Brunswick , Georgia and Brunswick County , Virginia .

In Brunswick, Georgia, a stain on a memorial pot indicates that the first Brunswick stew was cooked here. It is written on the base:

" In this pot the first Brunswick Stew was made on St. Simon Isle July 2, 1888"
(In this pot the first Brunswick Stew was cooked on St. Simon Island on July 2nd, 1888)

The competing story comes from Brunswick County in southern Virginia. Legend has it that a law enforcement officer invented the recipe while on a hunting expedition in 1828 and that the participants of the expedition were immediately drawn to the stew.

Brunswick is the English name for the German city or region of Braunschweig (Low German Brunswiek ).
