James City County (officially: County of James City) is a county of the US state Virginia of the United States and is located on the Virginia Peninsula in the southeast of the state on the Atlantic coast . The county seat is in Williamsburg .

James City County is located in the northwestern part of the Virginia Peninsula, which lies in the southeast of the state on the Atlantic coast . The county covers an area of 466.2 square kilometers, of which 95 square kilometers (20 percent) is water. It is bounded in the northeast by the York River and in the southwest by the York River . The county borders clockwise (starting in the north) with the counties: New Kent County , King and Queen Counties , Gloucester County , York County , Surry County, and Charles City Counties .
history
1634 was James City Shire by order of the English King Charles I founded. Shires were administrative units. Between 1637 and 1642 the renaming of the terms shire in county took place. James City County is one of five shires that has retained its original shape. James City County is of paramount importance to the history of the United States in several ways.
In James City County, Jamestown is the first permanent English settlement on what is now the United States, founded in 1607. The 400th birthday of the settlement is the occasion for extensive anniversary celebrations, which began in May 2006 and continued until 2008.
In 1634 Jamestown was chartered and became the first capital of the English colony of Virginia. After a major fire in 1698 largely destroyed the settlement, the capital was relocated to nearby Williamsburg a year later .
During the American Civil War , the Battle of Williamsburg took place near Williamsburg .

According to the 2000 census , James City County had 48,102 people in 19,003 households and 13,986 families. The population density was 337 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 82.05 percent white, 14.37 percent African American, 0.28 percent Native American, 1.46 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.44 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.36 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.70 percent of the population.
Of the 19,003 households, 30.5 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 61.8 percent were married couples living together, 8.9 percent were single mothers, 26.4 percent were non-families, 21.4 percent were single households and 9.0 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.86 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 23.3 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 6.4 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.3 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 26.1 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 16.8 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 93.9 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over, there were statistically 91.0 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 55,594 , and the median income for a family is $ 66,171. Males had a median income of $ 43,339 versus $ 27,016 for females. The per capita income was $ 29,256. 6.4 percent of the population and 4.1 percent of families are below the poverty line. 7.3 percent of these were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 4.8 percent were people over 65 years of age.
