Middlesex County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . In 2000, the county had 9,932 people and a population density of 29 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Saluda .

Middlesex County is located in eastern Virginia and has an area of ​​546 square kilometers, of which 208 square kilometers are water. To the north the border is formed by the Rappahannock River and to the east by the Chesapeake Bay . It is bordered, clockwise, by the following counties: Mathews County , Gloucester County , King and Queen Counties , and Essex Counties .

history

It was formed in 1669 from parts of Lancaster County. The only recorded city, Urbanna, was founded in 1680 and served mainly as a port to ship agricultural products by sea.

According to the 2000 census , Middlesex County had 9,932 people in 4,253 households and 2,913 families. The population density was 29 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 78.50 percent white, 20.13 percent African American, 0.25 percent Native American, 0.12 percent Asian and 0.41 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.58 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.55 percent of the population.

Of the 4,253 households, 22.4 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 56.1 percent were married couples living together, 9.5 percent were single mothers, 31.5 percent were non-families, 27.1 percent were single households and 14.4 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.73 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 19.2 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 5.1 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 22.9 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 30.3 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 22.5 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 47 years. For every 100 females there were 92.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 90.5 men.

The median income for a household in the 36,875 USD , and the median income for a family was 43,440 USD. Males had a median income of $ 30,842 versus $ 23,659 for females. The per capita income was $ 22,708. 9.7 percent of families and 13.0 percent of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 20.7 percent were children or adolescents under the age of 18 and 10.7 percent were people over 65 years of age.
