Fluvanna County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 20,047 people and a population density of 27 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Palmyra .
geography
Fluvanna County is located slightly northeast of the geographic center of Virginia and covers an area of 752 square kilometers, of which seven square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Louisa County , Goochland County , Cumberland County , Buckingham County, and Albemarle County .
history
It was formed in 1777 from parts of Albemarle County . It was named after the Fluvanna River . During the American Civil War , about 1,200 men from the county fought on the side of the Confederate States of America .

As of the 2000 census , Fluvanna County had 20,047 people in 7,387 households and 5,702 families. The population density was 27 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 79.44 percent white, 18.41 percent African American, 0.19 percent Native American, 0.38 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.29 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.25 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.17 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 7,387 households, 32.5 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 63.6 percent were married couples living together, 9.9 percent were single mothers, 22.8 percent were non-families, 18.8 percent were single households, and 7.0 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 2.93.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 23.6 percent of residents under the age of 18, 6.4 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 31.7 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 24.4 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 14.0 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 86.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 82.2 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 46,372 , and the median income for a family is $ 51,141. Males had a median income of $ 32,346 versus $ 24,774 for females. The per capita income was $ 20,338. 3.9 percent of families and 5.9 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 5.6 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 7.3 percent were people over 65 years of age.
