Fluvanna County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 20,047 people and a population density of 27 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Palmyra .

Fluvanna County is located slightly northeast of the geographic center of Virginia and covers an area of ​​752 square kilometers, of which seven square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Louisa County , Goochland County , Cumberland County , Buckingham County, and Albemarle County .

history

It was formed in 1777 from parts of Albemarle County . It was named after the Fluvanna River . During the American Civil War , about 1,200 men from the county fought on the side of the Confederate States of America .

As of the 2000 census , Fluvanna County had 20,047 people in 7,387 households and 5,702 families. The population density was 27 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 79.44 percent white, 18.41 percent African American, 0.19 percent Native American, 0.38 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.29 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.25 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.17 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
