Lunenburg County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . In 2000 , the county had 13,146 people and a population density of 12 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Lunenburg . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Lunenburg County is located in southern Virginia and covers an area of 1,120 square kilometers, of which two square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Nottoway County , Brunswick County , Mecklenburg County , Charlotte County, and Prince Edward Counties .
history
It was formed in 1746 from parts of Brunswick County. It was named after the Duchy of Braunschweig-Lüneburg in Germany, as some of the British kings came from the House of Hanover and carried the title of Duke of Brunswick-Lunenburg .

According to the 2000 census , Lunenburg County had 13,146 people. Of these, 1,191 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 4,998 households and 3,383 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 59.12 percent white, 38.58 percent African American, 0.16 percent Native American, 0.21 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.75 percent from other ethnic groups together. 1.14 percent were from two or more races. 1.79 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 4,998 households, 27.3 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 49.5 percent were married couples living together, 13.3 percent were single mothers, 32.3 percent were non-families, 28.7 percent were single households, and 14.7 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.91 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 21.3 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 8.0 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.1 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.8 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 16.8 percent were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 113.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 115.7 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 27,899 , and the median income for a family is $ 34,302. Males had a median income of $ 26,496 versus $ 20,237 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,951. 14.9 percent of families and 20.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. This included 27.3 percent of children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 22.8 percent of residents aged 65 and over.
